Arboricultural Consultancy

From our base in Wales, we provide Arboricultural Consultancy and advice throughout the UK.  The majority of our clients are in Wales, along the M4 corridor to London and south east England, and as far north as Manchester and Leeds although we’ll consider projects anywhere.

Safety & Condition Surveys

Safety & Condition surveys are carried out from ground-level according to the very widely used Visual Tree Assessment technique, for clients with larger estates, or multiple properties, desk-based studies using remote-sensing data can be used to prioritise areas for inspection.

Construction Planning Surveys

Our construction planning tree surveys are conducted according to the tree categorisation and root protection area (RPA) calculation methods set out in BS5837:2012. Our advice can include Foundation Design recommendations, Mitigation Proposals, New Planting Schemes and opportunities for habitat preservation or enhancement where appropriate.

Technologies

During our investigations we use the Picus3 sonic tomograph, IML Resi-F 500-E Resistograph, the Panasonic Toughpad FZ-G1 and soon for it’s video capture capabilities, the DJI Mavik Air Quadcopter. All our IT machines are equipped with the most up-to-date software suites allowing us to provide the most efficient service to our clients.

Dr Richard Wilson MICFor, RC Arbor A.

Chartered Arboriculturist & Registered Consultant

PhD., Cert. Arb (RFS), Prof. Dip. Arb (RFS), M ArborA., RC ArborA, MICFor

My career in the arboricultural industry has spanned 16 years, initially as a volunteer with Wildlife Trusts, then as Director and Lead Climber of C-Trees Ltd., an arboricultural services (tree surgery) company I established with my wife, Sally, and now as Director and Principal Consultant of Wilson Tree Surveys. I also spent some time as a part-time, temporary Tree Officer at the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Council.

I have extensive experience of conducting arboricultural surveys, analysing data and compiling reports for a wide range of clients and spanning the full range of arboricultural competencies. My key areas of expertise include:

  • Safety & Condition surveys
  • Hazard & Risk Assessment
  • Decay Detection (tomography and resistography)
  • BS5837:2012 Construction planning (including Arboricultural Implications & Tree Constraints assessments, Tree Protection, Mitigation & Planting Schemes and Method Statements)
  • Homebuyer’s surveys (Mortgage reports)

Our Areas of Expertise

Safety & Condition Surveys

Safety & Condition surveys consider features of biomechanics, pests, diseases, environment and health to assess risks and make management recommendations.

Construction Planning Surveys

With careful construction planning we can contribute to achieving successful project outcomes in which trees complement and enhance the built environment.

Home Buyer's Reports

Occasionally trees near buildings can have a negative impact, it is important to understand this when considering the decision to buy a home or property.

Decay Detection & Aerial Inspection

We offer several methods of detailed tree inspection: in-depth visual assessment using hand tools, Picus 3 sonic tomography, IML Resi-drill microdrill resistography, aerial inspection and coming in 2019, drone-based video capture.

Statutory Tree Protection & Valuation

Trees may be conferred protection by a number of legal instruments including Tree Preservation Orders, Conservation Area Statuses and the Forestry Act (1967). Valuations may be carried out using The Helliwell System and / or CAVAT.

Damage to Buildings

In cases where subsidence and structural damage can be linked to a tree’s growth, detailed investigations are needed to help property owners determine the correct course of action.

Boundary & Legal Disputes

Our role in disputes involving trees is to gather evidence, describe and assess relevant tree-related processes and present preliminary legal information to clients or their appointed legal representatives.

Technologies

We’ve invested a great deal in the latest investigative technologies including Picus3 sonic tomography, Resistography and direct electronic data capture in the field.

What our Clients say

It's extremely important to us that our Clients are 100% satisfied with all work that we carry out, here is just some of the feedback that we have collated from our client portfolio...

I engaged Richard to undertake a Tree Survey and Arboricultural Impact Assessment in support of our planning application and I’ve been delighted with the service that he’s provided. We had a really rough ride with the planners, but Richard was on hand throughout our consultation period to offer advice and support when I needed it, often responding to queries at short notice and out of standard business hours. His knowledge, professionalism, and general approach to his work is second to none and I’d recommend him in a heartbeat.

Chris Ruffle

We found Richard to be friendly, courteous and professional. He arrived exactly when he said he would and the THREATS survey was completed in good time. He appeared to have a real love for his work as well as a thorough knowledge of arboreal matters and was happy to chat informally about some of his findings over a cup of tea. The formal report was exactly as described and was returned to us within 24 hours. The report also included a few extras that we hadn't expected, including some useful information on new tree planting and soil preparation as this was something we had mentioned. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Richard to anyone wanting a first class professional service.
